Why Attend an Event?

Kings of War has a very active and healthy tournament scene, with over 300 players attending events in the UK in 2025. This shows how much players can get from the events, and it’s more than just playing our favourite game. So if you’re a new Kings of War player or someone who has yet to attend their first event, here are my reasons why I think you should come to your first Event.

You get to play 3 games in one day

With busy schedules it can be tricky to get regular games of Kings of War, however most single-day events consist of 3 games, and a weekend event will usually comprise of 5 games, or even 6 if we’re lucky. Coming to an event is a great way of getting a good number of games in.

Improve your gameplay

Leading on from the above point, playing at least 3 games in a day is an excellent way to get better at the game. Everyone is always very welcoming and especially with new players, will take the time to explain rules etc. Playing against more experienced players is a great way to pick up new tactics, and learn how all the different armies play, as you’re likely to come across a variety of new factions and play styles. It’s also a great oppurtunity to learn tips and tricks on improving your cleanliness and speed of play. One of the things I really struggled when first learning to play Kings of War was taking too long during my turns, but playing on a clock at events, meant that I had too learn to be quicker. Seeing how other players organsised themselves and played their turns meant I was able to learn and improve this side of my game.

Hangout with like-minded people

I was very nervous before attending my first event, however the vast majority of people at Kings of War events are super welcoming and friendly. I know wargaming events can have a stigma of attracting a certain type of crowd, however this couldn’t be further from the truth with Kings of War. Even though the vast majority of events are “comptetive” people still seem to prioritise, giving their opponents a good and fair game. The great thing about an event is everyone who is there, is there because they also love playing Kings of War, so you always have something to talk about.

Get to see all the cool armies

There’s always a period in the day where everyone sets out their armies, and people get to walk around and admire some truly exceptional hobby projects. This is a great oppurtunity to talk to people about their armies, ask questions about how they may have achieved a certain effect, and show off what you’re proud of about your army. It’s also great for motivating you to finish off your current hobby project, or inspire an idea for your next army.

As competitive as you want it to be

The Kings of War ruleset makes it an excellent competitive game, however not all players at events are competetive in nature. There is a really good range of people; from those hoping to win the event, to those just wanting to meet cool people and play 3 games without caring about the results, and neither mindset is considered the wrong one. You’ll have a great day, against top opponents no matter where on the leaderboard you are.
